About Me
With the combined 30 and counting of experience both as a performer and a drum trainer, Nguyen Huu Phu has left his mark, one that is nothing short of a tour de force, in the now-burgeoning music scene of Vietnam. Dividing his time between a formal instructor at the prestigious Ho Chi Minh City-based Soul Music & Performing Arts Academy (SMPAA) and a sought-after session drummer for various musical outfits, from popular music to extreme heavy metal, Nguyen Huu Phu has a great deal more to offer beyond his dynamic, diverse and extremely solid drumming.
Nguyen Huu Phu is Assistant Percussion Coordinator at Soul Music & Performing Arts Academy (SMPAA)
Formally educated since young age, Phu Nguyen the performer has been instrumental in the founding of a niche corner of underground, niche and alternative music scene, firstly partaking in numerous 2010s’ foundational local acts such as End of Road, Deep Blue Sea, Danger From Deers, Razor Leaf, in addition to his very own, now-defunct metal outfit Seismic Origin. With them, he has had the rare opportunities to have shared the stage with multiple international heavy music outfits, from WormRot (Singapore) in 2013, Rotten Sound (Finland) and Obey The Grave (Canada) in 2014, to Cryptopsy (Canada) in 2019. In addition, Phu Nguyen has session-drummed and recorded drummer reliably so, for a wide range of local artists at medium to ultra large audience sizes over the years.

As an educator, rigorously galvanized by the live experiences and collaborations with highly diverse local talents, Nguyen Huu Phu has established his own formula for success: not just academically, but deeply inspirationally. The mastery of the instrument, to him, lies intrinsically at one’s deepest love for music – the greatest efficiency – before the love for the music that they will create with others. His education is to channel this vigor, be it for the easy pop melodies or the intricate drumming patterns conceivable, towards organic personal growth, with precision.
